My goal was to keep this piece very short. I have slave owning ancestors on one side of my family tree and racist 20th century Irish immigrants on the other. I believe that if your ancestors were part of the civil rights struggle, especially in the 20th century, you probably know that history (and, as was just pointed out to me — these people could still have had mindsets that perpetuated racism). And if they weren’t, they could very well have been an active or passive part of the problem, because silence (to me) suggests acquiescence or complicity, even if we perceive the actions of racists to be wrong.
