My Morning Routine

As is evident from my previous posts, I’ve been working for three or four months to create goals and establish long-term habits. After reading Cathryn Lavery’s post, Why Creating a Meaningful Morning Routine Will Make You More Successful, I decided to share my own morning routine.

In my post, Developing and Maintaining Habits, I briefly mentioned my first two morning habits: drinking 16oz. of water as soon as I wake up and drinking a smoothie for breakfast. For the past two months, I have rarely strayed from these two habits and have slowly added more, which is called “habit stacking.”

As of now, my morning routine is fairly structured, yet it allows for some flexibility. I still drink 16oz. of water first thing when I wake up and make a smoothie for breakfast shortly after. I then typically drink a cup or two of coffee and either read a book on my kindle, read blogs, and/or scroll through my twitter feed. After an hour or so of putzing around, I typically go for a run on one of the trails near my house. When I get back, I chug more water, shower, eat lunch, and then it’s about time for me to go to work.

It’s hard to say “no” to a run when t you have bright blue skies above you, rolling, grassy plains around you, and the Big Horn Mountains off in the distance. July 2015

My Morning Routine Step-by-Step:

1.) 16oz. of water
2.) Drink a smoothie
3.) Drink 8–16oz. of coffee
4.) Read, write, or surf the net
5.) Run!

This whole routine seems simple, but it has taken me a while to get to this point. I am proud of how far I have come with my morning routine, but I am still thinking about ways to improve upon it, which I may share in a later post.
