“Review, Restructure, Renew”

Kathy Walter-Mack is an accomplished attorney and senior-level executive who has served as chief of staff to the chancellor and associate vice chancellor of human resources at Metropolitan Community College (MCC). After working on financial and operational reforms for more than six years with this Kansas City, Missouri-based institution Kathy Walter-Mack published an article entitled “Review, Restructure, Renew” in Business Officer Magazine.
Ms. Walter-Mack partnered with her colleague, Shelley Temple Kneuvean, to write “Review, Restructure, Renew.” This article began by examining the financial condition of MCC when Mark James became chancellor in 2010. Due in part to a 30 percent decline in state appropriations and in part to significant increases in the cost of insurance and utilities, MCC was in danger of exhausting its economic resources within five years.
The article goes on to address the measures subsequently taken to remedy this problem, beginning with an extensive budgeting analysis, an information technology audit, and a structural faculties review. By addressing specific inadequacies in these three key areas, MCC ultimately stabilized its financial reserves with a $100 million general fund that is currently experiencing annual growth of approximately 1 percent.
