It’s a very interesting article. I agree that the use of applause feels a bit weird. While I get where they are coming from with this new implementation, feels a bit disconnected with the actual liking ir acceptance of that article. Some readers might like the article a lot, but don’t wan’t to spend enough time pressing the icon to reach 50 applauses, and would probably stop at less than 10.

On the other hand I’m not sure if allowing any user to create a word tag for that article would be a good idea, since there would be some readers who could use that to write offensive or harmful messages. I think that something on the direction of the Facebook reactions and Buzzfeed built-in tags could be a good start.
