I never said there wasn’t a single company out there that was able to solve this problem. What I am saying is that it’s so common as to influence the marketplace in such a way that mediocrity is assumed to be the norm. In other industries, these issues will exist to some extent, and within tech they happen a lot. Businesses of all types vary on a number of scales, and the chances are that those which are less toxic didn’t apply a process to achieve that – they simply had different conditions to begin with. It seems that tech is coming from a position of toxicity that needs to change, whereas other industries developed in more equitable environments.

I do think the problem can be solved, but the greatest barrier is resistance to change from those in the industry. If things stay the same, the problem may well solve itself by more diverse companies starting up and doing better. But in the meantime we still have to contend with demoralisation and attrition of the workforce, and the fact there is nothing to bridge the gap.
