How fundamental is discipline in our lives?

I believe it is 100% fundamental, if that even sounds logically or grammatically right.

I grew up in a home where the mother was that person who wouldn’t take any shadiness nor nonsense. She would never stomach any of our bad habits and made it her personal goal to use the cane to get those habits out of us (I am African). She was quite intense at times and even though I believe that discipline is fundamental, I am quite precise on what kind of discipline. I prefer having to sit down with the child or individual and talk and reason out together. But that is not the kind of discipline I was to write on today.

Well, I have goals, I think about them everyday. I keep on going back and forth on what I have done or what I am doing to achieve them. But mostly I am more sad than happy because what I am doing isn’t sufficient even by my own standards.

To get anywhere in life, you have to work like you have 19 hours a day while the rest of the world has 24 hours.

Goals are the reason why you wake up in the morning but discipline is the reason why you wake up at 6.00 am and not 10.00 am. Whenever I feel like I want to put extra effort into what I am doing and something is keeping me from that, the thing is always lack of discipline.

So I made it a personal commitment to master discipline like it was an art of some sort.

When I was in school, all levels, I wasn’t the all rounded student. I mean I was good at sports and my grades were…uhm, let me just say promising but I hated rules. I hated that I had to follow them, that they made my life harder and that I had to pay for not obeying them.

All that while I thought I was being smart, cunning and tough (if you get what I mean). But when I didn’t pass my university entrance exam as much as I should have, it became a wake up call. Months on I blamed the school, my teachers, the rules etc for my ‘failure’ and only recently did I realize how much I lost by not being disciplined.

Discipline is that extra thing that makes the process of you achieving your goals much more fruitful and easier than you ever imagined. Well you still have to work hard, like really hard but discipline makes it easier to work hard.

“ Self discipline is that which, next to virtue, truly and essentially raises one man above another. ” — Joseph Addison
