10 Reasons Why You Should Be Working Remotely

Businesses around the world are beginning to realize the potential for remote employment. In 2016 alone, 43 percent of employed Americans said they spent time working remotely.

Many people already hold positions that can be done remotely but don’t know it. Are you one of them?

If your duties can be managed from home and you have the willpower to motivate yourself and complete tasks, you’re already on your way. Someone who works from home also needs excellent communication skills, as they’ll have to use a variety of methods — email, phone and IM — to stay in touch with co-workers, managers and bosses.

If you think you fit the description above, consider asking your boss about the possibility of working remotely. There are plenty of benefits to staying out of the office.

1. Faster Hiring Process

Some companies can take weeks or even months to make a hiring decision, especially large corporations with multiple locations. Companies that focus on remote work, especially smaller startups, typically have quicker hiring processes.

2. No Commute Time

One of the most significant benefits of working from home is the lack of a commute. Working remotely means eliminating that hour or two of sitting in rush-hour traffic, increasingly getting more frustrated. As a bonus, no commute is better for the environment.

3. Your Own Space

One great bonus to working remotely is having your own solo space. You decide who — or what — gets to enter your domain. Having your own secluded workplace is actually recommended to help get into work mode and complete projects more effectively.

4. Better Work Relationships

Just because you don’t go into the office each day doesn’t mean you don’t have an opportunity to build professional relationships. In fact, remote workers have a greater responsibility to keep the lines of communication open, typically leading to more effective and stronger relationships.

5. More Flexibility

For some, a great advantage to working remotely is complete schedule flexibility. You get to decide when and where you work, as well as the projects you want to complete. If you’re feeling tired and need a break, you can determine if you’re going to take a 30-minute nap before finishing your work.

6. Greater Productivity

You may fear that working from home will stunt your productivity. In reality, remote workers have shown to not only work longer hours but are also 20 percent more productive than those in the office. Working from home could boost your completed workload.

When you work remotely, you have control over your environment. At home, you can increase your productivity even further by cutting out distractions that are unavoidable in the office. Some workers find it helpful to completely turn off the Wi-Fi when working, while others find the break from annoying co-workers or demanding managers also improves performance.

8. More Time With Family

With more flexibility over your schedule and no annoying commute time, you’ll find you have more time to spend on what matters most to you. For some, this is family. Perhaps you want to be able to pick your kids up from school each day. Working from home means you can arrange your schedule to be finished by 3 p.m. each day.

Having flexibility in your career means having more control over your day, allowing more time to care for your physical and mental well-being. One study showed that 80 percent of remote workers reported high morale, perhaps due to the increased free time and schedule flexibility.

10. Healthier Lifestyle

It can be hard to motivate yourself to exercise, especially after a long day. However, remote workers have the benefit of scheduling healthy habits — a nutritious meal, a workout routine — whenever they feel most motivated, such as in the middle of the workday. One survey showed that 35 percent of remote workers get more exercise and 45 percent eat healthier than their office-bound counterparts.

Should You Work Remotely?

Working remotely can improve your productivity and overall happiness, as long as you have the tenacity and hardworking qualities necessary.

If you feel your position can be done remotely, speak to your boss about alternative arrangements. Working from home for a trial period, such as a week or two, can also be a test to see if it’s right for you.
