I recently visited the SEA LIFE Brighton Aquarium. Opening its doors in 1872, it is the oldest operating aquarium in the world.

Our visit was spontaneous, we were drawn in by the Victorian Architecture, and of course, I do enjoy visiting aquariums. It was my first time, and i was excited to explore this hidden gem.

Pumpkin the Octopus

Now i am an admirer of marine life in general, so i am already fascinated by the diversity of species kept there. But they are also important to educate us about the crucial role they play in maintaining our marine ecosystems across the world.

They need to be protected from over-fishing, pollution and marine destruction. And the lobster we were about to meet, really drove that home.

Lola the Lobster

Meet Lola. She is a blue lobster. According to Sea Life, “She was caught by a fisherman who could tell she was rare because of her colour. He did not want to take her to the restaurant [to be cooked and eaten] so he contacted us [Sea Life] to see if we could take her. The chance of a lobster being blue like this is 1 in 200 million!”

Sarlacc Jellyfish

Lola was one of the many rare Sea Life exhibits that we came across during our visit. Their continued efforts to preserve and protect the ocean and its ecosystems, were presented throughout the aquarium, from an interactive conservation cove to their ongoing mission with protecting the Beluga whales sanctuaries.

A very happy and content Terrapin!

Overall, i would recommend readers to visit aquariums in general. The exhibits are both stunning and educational. And if you wish to understand more about how you can help with protecting the ocean, there is research and missions that you can contribute to. Even learning about your favourite sea creature can help with its continued preservation!
