So you’ve stumbled upon someone reading a book in public!

My wife is a novelist. One of her dreams is to stumble across someone reading one of her books, perhaps on a plane. It’s less likely because as an Indie author most people reading her books are doing so on e-readers and it is hard to tell what someone is reading on one of those.

She maintains this dream even though she has no idea what she would do if it actually happened. What does one do? Like many authors, she is more introvert than extrovert. She’s unlikely to be so forward as to tap them on the shoulder and gush “you’re reading my book would you like for me to autograph it?” She’d likely just angst the whole time wondering if she should say something.

I’ve advised her of what I call the “Tom Landry Protocol.” He once famously stated that he didn’t like his players to celebrating too much when scoring a touchdown because he wanted “them to act like they had been there before.”

In any event, it has never happened and remains just a dream.
