A quick note about the banner photograph. My recollection is that the photographer, who worked for a local newspaper, asked the three boys on the right, the “toughs” in the “Toffs and Toughs”, to pose in that fashion.

One of the two “Toffs” died of diptheria a year later; the other suffered from serious mental health problems later in life. Seems somehow ironic given the intended message of the photograph.
