[UPDATE: Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa]
Lon Shapiro

Lon, I think Caitlin Dwelly said why I didn’t perfectly.

“I know exactly how you feel. If the discussion were just about manners and there was no sexism, we would open our own door or hold the second door open for a man. However, this man wanted to open the other door for you and not allowing him to is scarey. What if he gets mad? What if he shouts or hurts me for not walking through that damn door”

I was headed to open the door for him, but he told me he would do it. God help you if you hurt the wrong man’s pride or embarrass him. I’ve literally been choked for it. I don’t take chances.

I mean shit, women get murdered just for turning down a strangers advance on the street. Everything is cloaked in fear … especially if you’re a woman who has known violence at the hands of a man. If you have, you learn very quickly that most men can easily, easily physically hurt you and often for a minor offense.
