Meet Kelly Green

My name is Kelly Green, and I am a researcher, writer, environmental advocate and artist, nature nomad, and green witch. Green is my favorite color, and it brings so much joy into my life. What’s in a name? I’ll attempt to show you.

From what I understand I’ve always been in love with nature. My mother recalls early memories of me walking around with spiral notebooks jammed with sticks and leaves between their pages. The natural world fascinated me and I often played scientist, explorer, and teacher. There was something very satisfying to me about making lists, collecting data, getting into the nitty gritty details of my subjects, and even creating lessons and homework for my siblings. Yes, I actually found all of that fun.

I was also drawn to music at an early age. After dinking around and learning how to play “Twinkle Twinkle” and other nursery rhymes on my little five-key piano by ear, my parents took the initiative to get me signed up for piano lessons a few years later. I’m not an expert at piano now, but it opened the door to learn flute and teach myself clarinet. I also love to sing and taught myself how to play ukulele last year. There was a time in my life when I felt that being a musician or singer was what I was born to do, and though I became intimidated by theatrical egos and distracted by the pressure to get a “stable job”, I’m on plan C or D now in terms of career goals and am in the process of reconnecting with music more deeply once again.

I guess I mention that to say I am a creative person and enjoy being artistically-inclined. I always found joy in those open-ended creative projects they assigned us in school. Now that I’m free and out here adulting in the “real world”, I’m excited to see what I can do outside of that structured environment.

So far I feel I’ve been off to a good start. I take my bucket list fairly seriously. In 2020, instead of walking across the stage for my college graduation (ceremony was canceled), I shaved my head clean bald and began practicing witchcraft. I spent much of 2021 traveling across the country. I ate oysters, chicken gizzards, and gator for the first time (Sorry, vegans and vegetarians. I typically lean toward a plant-based diet, I promise.). I kayaked for the first time in the swampland of Florida. I drove up the west coast and remained on highway 1 from Santa Monica to Newport, trying my hand at van-lifing (or more like Prius-lifing, which I feel was even more challenging). In the two years that have passed since leaving school, I’ve had enough memorable experiences to last a lifetime, and I’m only getting started.
