I appreciate a well-intended opinion that does not agree with my own. I like hearing all sides of a story. However, I think Rob swings and misses with this analysis of Ready Player One. At the same time, I don;t think it’s his fault. Rob just doesn’t get it. He is a product of a generation who has always known the internet, probably growing up with an LCD screen for a babysitter.

While reading this article, trying to keep an open mind, searching for anything that would lend credibility to his point of view, I was stopped dead in my tracks when Rob compared James Halliday to Steve Jobs. Really? Do I really have to explain how completely off the mark this is?

Steve Jobs was a salesman and idea man. He couldn’t write a piece of code to save his life. James Halliday was a coding madman, locking himself away to code the OASIS for years while listening exclusively to RUSH. If you absolutely MUST, a comparison to Og would be more appropriate. Og, (Ogden Morrow) was the Steve Jobs in the Jobs/Wozniak relationship Rob was shooting for.

The moral of this article is: Don’t try to write about geek culture if you just don’t get it.
