Island

Life changing events are few and far between, memories of those moments become precious and grounding proof. Naoshima, an island off the coast of Okayama, which hosts fascinating contemporary art at a site specifically built for experience.

Concrete walls all the same, all different, familiar but treated specifically.

The island is simply beautiful, but the underlying concept of this island is what inspires the memorable moments. Adopting a location through means of collaboration between an Architect and Investor. Translating their love for art, objects, and structure into a project. Making an all of that into an experience that only exists at this destination. This seemingly overwhelming idea caused quite an internal dialogue.
Allowing me to question the idea and execution of a “personal project.” The time frame allowed or not allowed, extending, and adding to it. Pre planning flexibility so that whatever it is can evolve as the the elements and individuals around it evolve.

Questioning the form of a “true” collaborative relationship, where each party respects the vision and process of the other. Feeding off the energy of each other and most importantly providing a platform for others to grow and learn from.

This place has inspired many, and brought many people to its shores that would take a piece of the island create something inspiring to others.
A worth while excursion to an Island of an Island.
