Hi. I’m interested in your ideas and I am a teacher who has to try to help students navigate the complexities of when to use academic language. I also teach Language A level – language change and its links with identity are explored, so I don’t regard myself as a language snob. Can you be more specific about what you mean about valuing forms of slang? How will I know if I am valuing it? How will students know it is valued? It seems to me that classrooms are a formal setting and students should adapt their language in that context. That doesn’t mean I spend time correcting them. I do want them to express themselves freely, particularly when discussing difficult concepts when thorough understanding is slightly out of reach.
