The 2024 Sugar Bowl between Texas and Washington is the College Football Playoffs semifinal game.

Last year, these teams played in the Alamo Bowl, which really did not mean that much to either side. This year the stakes are much higher.

Texas and Washington line up in the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which this season is part of the College Football Playoffs. The winner goes onto play for a National Championship.

So there’s a lot on the line when the kickoff sails into the lights of the Superdome on Jan. 1. It will be intense for fans on both sides but because the game in New Orleans it will also be a lot of fun. Plus it’s New Year’s Eve time and New Orleans is the best place to be for NYE in the world.

Back to the game and related events. There used to be a FanFest set up a few days before the Sugar Bowl but not this year. There is, tho, a parade along Duval Street that goes through the French Quarter (tho not on Bourbon Street) on New Year’s Eve starting at 2:30 p.m. It finishes at Jackson Square. The day of the game there is a ticket-holders-only tailgate party by the stadium, starting at 4 p.m. Kickoff is 7:45 local time (Central Time).

Otherwise, there is the party that is New Orleans, with Bourbon Street and NYE. Here’s some tips and things to know so fans on both sidees can maximize their fun:

  • There is no open container law in the French Quarter. You can take drinks from the bars onto the street and even get “Big Ass Beers” as the sign says and to-go drinks from street vendors and bars.
  • Bourbon Street has 2-for1, 3-for-1 and some places even 4-for-1 Happy Hours every day of the week running from approximately 4–7 p.m. The big tip here is not to overdo it during Happy Hour so you’ve got plenty left in the tank for the rest of the night
  • There are NYE fireworks along the Mississippi River. Most people watch from Jackson Square. The big tip here is to arrive at Jackson Square by about 11 because it’s very crowded and you don’t want to get squeezed out of the view.
  • The Superdome is walking distance from Bourbon Street. Takes about 15 minutes — maybe 20 on this game day – at a leisurely “Nawlens” pace.
  • The weather can be anything: sunny, rainy, warm or freezing cold. Even all of the above because the weather can change in drastic ways within a couple of days.
