Established in 1982, the Montauk RJA Memorial Mighty Montauk Triathlon takes place in the hamlet of Montauk in New York. The race begins with a one-mile swim in Lake Montauk, followed by 22 miles of cycling. The out-and-back ride takes participants along a hilly route with views of the historic Montauk Lighthouse. During this portion of the competition, cyclists must use a hard-shell helmet and bar-end plugs, and drafting is not allowed. Finally, participants must run 6.2 miles through some scenic, challenging hills.

The Montauk Triathlon does not allow the use of electronic devices, such as MP3 players. While there are no water stops during the cycling portion of the race, there are water stops at each mile marker during the running portion of the event. Participants must complete the race within 3 hours and 55 minutes.
