10 must have Herbs and Spices in Indian cooking

We regularly see the use of many types of conventional herbs and spices like turmeric or garlic. But since we have now been introduced to the concept of fusion food, there has been an increase in the uses of newer herbs and spices like oregano and basil. Oregano has gone from being just a pizza topic to something more useful.

To make the preparation simpler we have come up with a list of 10 herbs and spices that are absolutely essential in every kitchen.

  1. Ginger –

Not only does ginger add an amazing flavour to meals as a marinade, it is also useful in settling the stomach. It is frequently used in tea and can also help in soothing morning sickness. Ground ginger is also used in baking and has a more intense flavour.

2. Garlic —

Garlic like ginger adds a robust flavour to meals. It also has medicinal properties and helps regulate blood sugar and heart rate. When mixed with ginger it makes for an amazing marinade or paste, frequently used in Indian cooking among other herbs and spices

3. Basil –

Basil is majorly used in Italian dishes. It accompanies oregano seasoning and also goes with tomato sauces. It improves blood flow and regularises heart rate.

4. Mustard –

Mustard powders and pastes are used to thicken the gravy. The seeds along with oil and other herbs and spices are also used to add tadka to dal or vegetables. Mustard is generally stored as seeds instead of paste as they last longer that way.

5. Oregano –

Oregano comes from the mint family and has quite a robust flavour. Unlike other herbs and spices, oregano has a pre conceived notion of being a pizza herb! It has many other uses which is now slowly coming to the Indian kitchen.

6. Pepper –

An extremely versatile spice, pepper has universal use. From garnishing to its use in cooking, pepper can be used in a lot of places. It increased metabolism and your level of energy. Freshly ground pepper always smells and tastes better.

7. Coriander –

Coriander or kothimbir as we know it, is used as a garnish in all the savoury dishes. It improves presentation of the food, smells amazing and tastes better! As a fresh herb and spice, it needs to be stored in the fridge. However the seeds and powder needs to be stored in airtight containers.

8. Red chillies –

A staple in Indian cooking, red chillies, fresh or dried can be found in every household! The most commonly used amongst the herbs and spices, it gives your food the gorgeous red colour that Indian cooking is famous for.

9. Garam Masala –

No dish is complete without a dash of garam masala! It adds a beautiful and strong flavour to the dish as well a wonderful colour that makes a dish appealing.

10. Cinnamon –

Out of the herbs and spices mentioned, cinnamon is known as a warm and aromatic herb. Also available as a stick, cinnamon can be used to flavour tea and coffees as well as baking. Also used in curries and stews it is a versatile spice.
