Bad sex is cheaper than negligent driving
When I was at the office yesterday, some friends asked me how I was able to ride a motorcycle everyday without being afraid. They also asked me why motorcyclists cause problems on the road by ‘not following road rules’.
I remarked that I do my best to follow the rules, but it is often risky to follow them blindly. One example is how dangerious it is to simply proceed on a bike when a robot turns green — I often have to manouver my way away from an idiot that turned into me even though the robot in front of them is red.
I then remarked that I am a terrible driver of 4-wheeled vehicles, but that I am also quite average in this regard. They side-eyed me. I said, ’ Dunning Kruger Effect, the thing that makes us likely to overestimate our abilities on the road, in bed, and at work’
“Don’t laugh. Our inclination to overestimate our abilities has a very high cost to society”. “What cost?” Jojo asked. I remarked that our negligence in different domains have different negative externalities.
I think that the cost of over-estimating ones driving ability often results in expensive insurance payouts, the loss of productivity after an accident and sometimes death. Contrast that with the cost of over-estimating ones ability in bed?
The cost of a missed orgasm can result in lower productivity and well-being , but seldom would it result in death. So sometimes our bad driving can make us murderers. My humble opinion.
