DUBAI-STYLE HOLACRACY

Dear friends! In one of my previous post I wrote that we opened an international office in Dubai and stated the reasons why we did it there. One of the reasons is that this city is like a kindred soul to us. Today I’m going to do a follow-up on this topic and tell you what I saw in common between this metropolis and our company. Holacracy as a style of management became the unifying element. As a matter of fact, I must say that the decision to open an office in Dubai did not come immediately. There were doubts: an Arab state, a Muslim country, everything is very strict… Everything turned out to be not so scary.

In management I single out 3 reference points: satisfaction of basic needs, arrangement of comfortable and safe conditions and development. This fits perfectly well into the holacratic management system. And this is implemented in Dubai at the national level. Basic needs are met for sure — there is a high level of salaries and a corresponding high level of prices. As for safe conditions, Dubai is the safest city on Earth. Speaking of development, this is the most dynamically developing metropolis in the world.

Why has Dubai become such a comfortable city for its citizens? Appropriate conditions have been provided. They created a comfort zone that you don’t want to leave. The Ruler of Dubai Mohammed once decided not to follow the path of overall tightening of laws (which often leads to an authoritarian or even totalitarian regime) but simply began to create good living conditions for his fellow citizens. We at INSPECTRUM CLINIC also follow this policy in relation to the employees.

Yes, Dubai laws cannot be called lenient or soft. But it is due to them that it is safe to live and work in the emirate: for example, any visitor’s violation or action that can be regarded as a threat to someone’s safety is punishable by deportation or even imprisonment. But the most interesting thing (and surprising for us Russians) is the rules of conduct for the citizens of the UAE, the locals. For example, if a tourist gets into a car accident or behaves inappropriately while drunk, then he/she will most likely be pardoned. But a local might face deportation in this case. Another situation: a Dubai citizen (hypothetically speaking) feels superior to a tourist and takes the liberty of saying something unethical: “Who do you think you are? Do you know who I am?” This may cost him citizenship. Just think about it: a local can be deprived of citizenship for a couple of harsh words said to a visitor! Can we imagine something like this in our country? Unfortunately, no. All this indicates a high degree of responsibility and consciousness of the citizens of the UAE and Dubai in particular. Why do people obey the laws there? Because people appreciate the conditions in which they live and understand that adherence to the established rules partially ensures these comfortable conditions.

Now a few words about the concept of “development” in the management system. People believe in a company/city/country, if they see that it is developing. Probably several decades ago, someone standing in the middle of the desert under the scorching sun skeptically declared that there would be nothing but camels there. And now there is a city of tomorrow that has come true. Our Napoleonic plans to change the healthcare system, to build an international medical IT company often cause such reaction too. In the meantime, we have opened an office in Dubai and are moving forward. As they say, dogs may bark but the caravan moves on (through the Dubai desert).
