I will never be able to even begin to fathom the reason for a random shooting of another human being.

On Saturday evening, Ashley Fricke was with her sister at the Walmart at 145 Hill Carter Parkway in Ashland. According to the news article, Brittany Wiggins just walked up to the vehicle and shot Ashley multiple times, while her sister was in the vehicle with her.

There appears to be no connection between the women, it was just a random, senseless murder that took a 24-year-old woman away from this world before she even had a chance to begin to live.

Brittany Wiggins was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in a felony, and shooting into an occupied vehicle. She is currently being held at the Pamunkey Regional Jail and appeared in Hanover County court today via video for her arraignment hearing. The judge ordered her held without bond until her trial set to begin on April 21.

It should come as no surprise that our resident “bad-boy” attorney, Joe Morrissey, has had his firm step up to represent Wiggins on these charges. While I understand that every defendant deserves to have representation in court, I just cannot help but shake my head at this particular case. The only option I can even remotely see as a viable defense in this matter is that Wiggins was not within her right mind at the time of the shooting. Unfortunately, nothing will bring back Ashley Fricke, and now two young women have lost their lives — one in death, the other to incarceration — and an entire group of family and friends will forever be scarred by this senseless act.
