I agree, Naomi. It does not seem to be a well placed ad and it would be interesting to find out what rational led the decision to place the ad. We may learn something, but most likely will never find out.
Ultimately, the mag’s potential to offend an important readership segment and contributors seems to represent the highest risk. Will the bar be filled to the rafters following this ad? I doubt it. Was the ad spend/revenue worth the potential risk of reputational damage? I doubt it. The best one could potentially shoot for is to make the mag aware of the issue?
