APPLICATION FOR THE 2016 UNGA INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
My name is Kim Lucas. I am 39 years old and I believe I can contribute to important areas of policy to help create significant change for the betterment of humanity. My background of research began as I was recovering from a car accident, reading and researching every day to find statistics and new solutions to combat sex trafficking of minors and implement change in policy to protect innocent children. Safe zones need to be implemented for those at risk of being trafficked, and laws must protect innocent children by each country preventing sex offenders from travelling to destinations that exploit children. I have a presentation that provides clear information regarding trafficking in Asia, the extent of my research found crimes so sickening, I will never stop fighting to protect children from being trafficked.
For the past two years I have researched human rights at university. I am deeply committed to finding solutions to help those who are afflicted by violence and poverty. I have researched the illegal arbitrary imprisonment of asylum seekers in Australia and offshore. My results after taking it upon myself to study international law to find solutions were sent to lawyers and shared on social media to inform others of the systematic trauma suffered by those escaping persecution.
I have also spent much of my spare time reading extensively about Bashar Al-Assad and the plight of the Syrian people. The mass exodus of refugees from Syria is very important to me, I would like to contribute to creating safe pathways for those seeking asylum and create policies that are humane and dignified, again, preventing trafficking of children and women, providing warm shelter, food, education and employment. Social inclusion and safe zones to protect children and women from traffickers. I have established connections in Italy who could contribute to these policies also.
The implementation of equal representation for women within parliaments to establish policies to prevent sexual violence, protect children and women, provide safe education for girls, health care for women and childcare also. Peace forums must be established also to create strong legal policies to stop and prevent war. Children suffer the most at the hand of war, and I feel it is so important that we create policy to end war. I would like to contribute to establishing legally binding peace policies for human rights.
The protection of the environment to sustain clean water, air and land must be achieved, again, legal policies within local, state, national and international must be established to protect the earth. Eco-side must end. Clean energy solutions are imperative to establish a future without coal seam gas and coal mining.
I am willing to listen, learn and contribute if I am able. I believe my compassionate nature and my personal dedication to the United Nations is a key element for consideration for an internship. I love learning; I love qualitative research and the importance of including policy design with people who the policies are designed for. I believe my interpersonal skills is something which can be used and is vital to work for the United Nations.
I am currently studying sociology and political science at university and considering studying international law in the future. I have also begun studying Arabic. I hope you consider me for the internship in America. It is an opportunity of a life time, and I want to learn so much more.
Kind regards
Kim Lucas
