Korea’s southeastern accent ‘-어라고’
There’s a verb conjugation like ‘들으라고’, ‘먹으라고’ and etc in Korean standard accent.
It’s the one that is mixed with ‘-으라고’ and verb’s meaning syllable like ‘듣’ out of ‘듣다’, ‘먹’ out of ‘먹다’.
And there is another conjugation like ‘들어라고’, ‘먹어라고’ and to name a few.
This comes from a combination of ‘들어’ and ‘-라고’. As you all know, ‘들어’ is a basic conjugation of verb, and ‘-라고’ is used to indicate that the sentence before ‘라고’ is cited one.
But Daegu people apply the rules differently.
Without further ado, let’s do it with table below.
Four way of speaking will be compared this time.
As you see above, listeners are easily able to distinguish which way the speaker is speaking when in standard way of speaking. (In case you have a question, we Koreans often omit “말했어” after “-어라고” when quoting directly.) But when a person use one out of the four above with Daegu accent, listeners get confused.
When they talk like “먹어라고” all of a sudden, I rationally understand that it’s going to be an imperative sentece but as a standard accent user, my brain keeps me from thinking that way and induces me to admit the remark as a direct quotation. So it makes me feel like someone else said it to me and it continuously bothers me.
Let me wrap up this posting with some example sentences below.
