Are you a heart whore?

And I’m glad you did. ❤

I absolutely died seeing that title!

Another perspective:

Those same people with 1K+ followers may be the same people with only 11–40 consistent hearts on a story. If that. Which is not bad, of course, but gives a sense of the disproportion. Out of a thousand people you meet, for example, you may like only 1. Or even 0.

Some people may “heart” because they like the person, not even necessarily the writing.

Some people may “heart” to be nice.

Some people may “heart” out of guilt.

Some people may “heart” because of what a writer consistently gives to them.

Some people may “heart” because of the topic.

Some people may not “heart” easily at all.

I think it’s very complex. I enjoy many pieces that I don’t heart, for example. It’s all very political. What’s awesome about Medium is that it gives writers a chance outside of the doom and gloom constant rejection pool of traditional literary submission. But, of course, that advantage gets inundated by many other disadvantages. Eh. It’s never been easy to be a writer.

There’s a saying that speaks to a line in your piece. Yeah, it’s got a lot of hearts and re-tweets and likes, but can I ultimately pay my bills with those hearts, re-tweets and likes?
