THE ASSIST

Why The Best Leaders Are The Best Playmakers..

After watching my favorite new basketball player, Ben Simmons, during the NBA Summer League I’ve noticed how his style of play can be called a culmination of Magic and Lebron. He’s even a near replication of both players in size.

The main strength in Ben’s style of play is his ability to pass the ball. Everytime he comes up the court he doesn’t look at the rim for a quick basket. Instead he motions players to move around as he quickly make out the best decision on where to move the ball. Being a dominant point guard is analogous to being a sufficient leader in real life.

In most cases, one person wants to be a “ball hog” and keep all the glory for themselves. They constantly attempt to do things that is non-beneficial to the group and in turn put the team at a greater risk of loss for each decision the individual makes. A true leader looks to bring up the members of the group by creating a play specifically designed for them to prosper. You may point a member towards a style of dress that will best suit them, suggest information for that person who want to dive deeper into a certain subject, or even something as simple as setting someone up with a date. In any scenario the leader does what may be perceived as a sacrifice, but in actuality is the leader being assertive in knowing how to highlight every situation to make their group better.

On the flip side of things each leader must know when to take matters into its own hands. The leader holds the title for a reason. It is the unique skill set of the leader that makes the team chances of winning possible and when the pressure becomes too much for the group it’s up to you(the leader) to step up and do what it is needed. For example, Lebron often seeks to uplift his players but when the heat is on(no pun intended) Lebron takes on the task of scoring, defending, and whatever else must be necessary in order to secure the win.

No matter if you’re on the court, in the office, or in the kitchen; an assist is always there to be made, trust your team but more importantly trust yourself!
