Astigmatism is a disorder that hinders one’s focusing ability and distorts vision. The level of astigmatism can improve or decrease the quality of your vision. It is a very common eye condition which is generally accompanied by myopia or hyperopia and is not age specific. The cornea of people suffering from astigmatism is not totally spherical in shape which may be due to some defect in the eye lens.

But with the advent of technology, you can avail multiple options to correct astigmatism; one of them being contact lenses. These lenses are also known as toric lenses and you can choose from a wide range of designs and fittings that will help you eradicate the issue.

What are toric lenses?

This lens for astigmatism does not constitute of the usual spherical surface; instead, it is shaped like say, a doughnut with a somewhat different focusing or refractive power and vertical/horizontal orientation.

Important things to consider before wearing toric lenses:

The fitting is the most important criteria if you wish to wear toric lenses. They are created differently, have a different orientation and need to be inserted into the eye in a particular way. The main features of these contact lenses are as follows:

· Lens truncation: The end of the lens is cut.

· The thickness and the thinness vary at various zones.

· Ballasting: This lens area is thicker.

Therefore, you need to fit the contact lens in a different way since the contact lens constitutes of a middle axis in order to maintain vision clarity.

There are various types of toric lenses available in the market such as disposable toric lenses, coloured toric lenses, soft/rigid-gas-permeable/hard lenses and others. These lenses are comfortable but need some extra care while you put them on. So visit your eye doctor and get your own pair of contact lenses for astigmatism.
