In Australia too; we call it the Tall Poppy syndrome. Just because a person is rich, famous, or powerful doesn’t make them better than anyone else.

A similar time-honoured tradition, known as Insulting the Meat, evolved among the San people of the Kalahari. Presumably, this was one of the factors that ensured social cohesion over the (very) long term.
