There is this blogger who I read (hateread, let’s be honest) and she is both in medical school and in yoga teacher training and blessed be to Laurie Penny for divining why she is so insufferable. Rather than focusing on the medicine part to do selfless good in the world (volunteering, research, whatever), she is obsessed with how much of a better person YOGA makes her. Teaches her grace and honesty and blah blah blah gross.
Using your basic medical skills to volunteer at a low-income clinic — helping.
Learning really fancy stretches as a path to radical self-acceptance — not helping.
(nb: I have nothing against yoga or even think this blogger has to volunteer, but if you are going to talk big about the big changes you are going to make in the world, maybe yoga isn’t the first step.)
