Position Statement-What do all students deserve in a reading teacher?

Every student deserves an excellent teacher who is passionate about helping them to become than they were yesterday. An excellent teacher is someone who motivates students by incorporating parts of a student’s personal life into lessons. They have a variety of approaches to teaching reading and other subject areas. These approaches help students to become motivated to be lifelong learners. Along with these strategies, students deserve to have a teacher who has high expectations for each student. Students will rise to the expectations set for them and they deserve a teacher who is willing to see their potential and help them to meet it.

Every student deserves a teacher who is going to make reading instruction fit their unique needs. Some students need accommodations because they are struggling. Other students need enrichment to help them to use their higher level thinking skills. Students deserve a teacher who will find the way to teach to their just right level.

Finally, students deserve a support system. Teachers cannot do their jobs without the community around them. In order to meet the needs of each student, teachers need administrators who are fair instructional leaders, parents who work as partners with the teachers, and support staff who can help to differentiate the learning to meet the unique needs of each student.
