Sarah, m’dear, here’s a suggestion for a first step that will actually let you…stay in the kitchen if needed.

Start college from the privacy of your computer. Don’t worry, there’s no cost. I know because I’ve been taking courses — the site is called Coursera (Here) and there are literally hundreds of courses you can take. Free. If you want the actual accreditation, it costs about $49 per course (or per month for courses that are lumped together into a specialization).

I have taken Ancient Egypt, Buddhism and Modern Psychology, De-Mystifying Mindfulness, Introduction to Psychology and Magic in the Middle Ages. The courses are all on video, you can watch at your own pace. There are forums and discussion groups online within the course, so you can interact with your “fellow students” if you want to. There are quizzes and essays if you’re going for credit. (Or just to check how much you are retaining.)

There is the possibility of finding courses that can help you with training for a new job, specifically computer courses (programming, mostly). None of them seem to go for more than about 3–4 months (weekly classes). The ones I took were mostly short, lasting 4–7 weeks. So you can start with something short and sweet…and if you’re not paying for it, decide that you hate and refuse to complete the course, you’re only out time, not $$.

Hope you find it as useful and interesting as I do.

Peace and hugs and blessings, as always.

K
