Close-up of a white medlar flower.

Forever

They sat together in silence on a bench, each in their own presence. The world moved by, sometimes faster, sometimes slow. It did not affect them. Birdsong filled the air, redolent of a sweet fragrance from the flowering medlar shrubs.

A robin came by, sat in front of the bench, looked at them, and moved on. A susurration spoke of a gentle breeze in the surrounding trees. The grass at their feet swayed lightly, forming verdant waves.

They sat together in silence when her hand fell next to him onto the seat of the bench, small, fragile and cold. He let his palm slide over it, big, strong and warm, while Now stretched into Forever.

This microfiction was inspired by the writing prompt #FromOneLine 338 — “They sat together in silence”.
