Kim Davis and “Religious Freedom”

Today, we watched again as Kentucky Clerk, Kim Davis, once again defied a court order to assert her ‘religious freedom’. This time was different. This time she not only defied the state federal court, the Kentucky Governor, and the 6th District Court of Appeals (which stated she would not be successful on appeal), she defied the Supreme Court of the United States. She has now been summoned as well as everyone in her office to a federal court to face charges of contempt.
Enough is enough! It is now time for the Kentucky Governor to call a special session of the legislature of Kentucky to consider the impeachment of Kim Davis. He needs to do this on principle and show that he is serious when he stated that all Clerks in the state must adhere to the SCOTUS ruling and issue marriage licenses to all, regardless of sex.
Kim Davis is having her 15 minutes of fame and probably considers herself a martyr, which is unfortunate for the families and couples that she has thrown into limbo because of her choice of action. I find it interesting that someone who is so religiously minded has been divorced a few times and I also find it interesting that someone who cannot consciously comply with the SCOTUS order won’t resign her office and allow the Governor to appoint someone who will adhere to the oath of the office to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Could it be that because she lives in a very comfy lifestyle, making 75k per year, which is not a very ‘religious principle’ if you ask me.
I am really tired of these ‘religious freedom’ outcries from the right when they have used their religion to persecute anyone who enhances diversity. If you want to look at history, you don’t have to look very far to find that interracial marriage was once forbidden by ‘God’ at one time. The Bible (which can be equated to the equivalent of Cinderella or Snow White in validity) was also used to support the notion of White Supremacy.
Look it up, I did. The main basis for this argument is the same argument that I have made on several different issue fronts. Separation of Church and State (which was underscored in a letter as the intent in the Constitution). The reason that this is so important is because we cannot allow one religion to rise above others. As an elected official you represent people from all different backgrounds and the only people crying ‘religious freedom’ are the fringe religions like Evangelicals and the conservative right. As an elected, state and federal official your religion cannot come into play with your decisions.
I hope that the federal court comes to the right decision on Thursday and require Kim Davis to comply or face huge fines. I also hope that the court says that she will be required to pay restitution to the couples that she has inflicted mental duress on.
Do your job or resign!
