Komen CSNJ Golf for the Cure: A Pink-Filled Tradition to End Breast Cancer
Written by Juliana Baumann, a guest blogger for Komen CSNJ and a Women’s Leadership student at Clemson University
Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey (Komen CSNJ), in partnership with signature sponsor Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (Horizon BCBSNJ), has been raising funds for the fight against breast cancer through the annual Golf for the Cure outing for 18 memorable years.
Each year, impassioned sponsors, employees and guests of all skill levels come from near and far to participate in a fun and friendly tournament, followed by a spirited dinner and awards ceremony.
Golf for the Cure is one of Komen CSNJ’s largest fundraising events, raising over $2.5 million since its very first outing in 2000. This event has provided Komen CSNJ with the opportunity to make a difference locally, helping to fund local programs in the community that provide services like mammograms, breast cancer education, transportation assistance and access to care. These funds also make an impact on a national scale, helping to fund groundbreaking research initiatives.
Each year, Golf for the Cure grows stronger thanks to incredible attendees, sponsors and volunteers. The event has developed impressively in major part of the involvement and support greatly devoted from Horizon BCBSNJ co-chairs Doug Blackwell, Senior Vice President & CIO, and Allen Karp, Executive Vice President - Healthcare Management & Transformation, in gathering sponsors and vendors to participate in the event’s meaningful cause.
“Horizon is proud to be the leading sponsor again this year for the 2018 Susan G. Komen Golf for the Cure,” said Blackwell. “I can’t think of a better cause to support as so many of us are touched by the disease, as every two minutes, a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer.”
There is one truly special individual who brought this event to life.
Komen CSNJ reflects on the incredible impact contributed by the late Donna Celestini, former Horizon BCBSNJ Vice President of Business Process Improvement and supporter of Komen CSNJ, who passed on in 2017 after her own battle with cancer.
Donna co-chaired the Golf for the Cure event for over 10 years. It was under her guidance that not only did the event raise over $1.5 million in whole, but she also shaped the outing into one that many people looked forward to attending year after year. Her sparkle and spirit for the event was felt consistently by participants.
In 2012, Donna was recognized with the Spirit of Jane Rodney Award, given to individuals who exemplify a passion for the Komen vision of a world without breast cancer. At the 2015 Golf for the Cure outing, Donna was presented the Promise of One Award, a special honor given to just two volunteers each year who have made an exceptional contribution to the Affiliate.
Donna’s energy and enthusiasm are deeply missed, but will continue to be celebrated through a distinguished award in her name, the Donna Celestini Award, given to the tournament champions of each Golf for the Cure.
In ongoing remembrance of Donna, and the passion she inspired in others, Komen CSNJ is motivated to have another wonderful Golf for the Cure event this October.
“The Golf for the Cure event has been a tradition of hope, perseverance and commitment to the battle against breast cancer,” said Suzanne Corson, executive director of Komen CSNJ. “Thanks to the incredible support of sponsors like Horizon BCBSNJ, donors and golfers, and Donna’s amazing influence, we are able to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.”
