History of the First Coffee House

The first coffee house which then became the forerunner of coffee shops worldwide appeared in Islamic world around the 16th century. It appeared in Damascus, Mecca and Istanbul where the coffee house is the place for gathering, talking about news and politics and other stuff and also doing any activities while drinking coffee. This variety of activities has brought an influence in their society.

For example, Coffeehouses in Mecca used to be a concern of Imams who viewed them as places for political gatherings and drinking. This concern leads to a ban on coffee houses but not for so long. Coffee houses later became ingrained in daily ritual and culture across the Islamic world.

Whereas in Europe, coffee houses appeared around the 17th century. In the coffee house, people played cards or chess, worked, read, thought, composed, discussed, argued, observed and just chatted. These various activities from the coffee houses in any country of Europe then also brought an important role for the society.

In England for example, coffee houses used to be believed to be areas where anti-government gossip could easily spread. Charles II later tried to suppress London coffeehouses as “places where the disaffected met, and spread scandalous reports concerning the conduct of His Majesty and his Ministers”.

Modern Coffee Shops

In the 1990’s, coffee shops were reintroduced as internet cafes. This means that coffee culture which used to happen in coffee houses or coffee shops have changed. Even though some people are still drinking and talking about news and politics in it, it almost doesn’t have much influence on society anymore.

The modern stereotype of coffee shops is that it is the place where new ideas about business are born and become startups. Another stereotype is that coffee shops are the place where a writer creates good writing and or books. It changes but it still represents productivity.
