We were the best friends you could imagine. A band of misfits, unable to connect with other people, but despite our differences we spent about every moment together for as long as I remember.
That’s why Jake’s disappearance hit us so hard. He was always the most rational, the straight man of the bunch. We waited to see if he would suddenly reply to our calls, but to no avail. One after one, the others would vanish too. After the third one, we figured out that this was no coincidence. There was someone taking away my friends, and I was scared and enraged at the same time. They say it’s always someone close to you.
When I figured out it was the middle aged man that we saw a couple of times a week, there was no room left for rational thought. I woke up alone the next day in a place I used to share with my friends, I stormed into his office with a kitchen knife and started stabbing him, I only stopped when he was barely recognizable.
I sometimes get the newspaper in this white padded room. They say I’m a monster, and I’ve been inclined to agree ever since I read that headline.
“Patient with multiple personality disorders stabs psychiatrist to death.”
