Punishment and pain will only cause you to fall (step 3)
We’ve all heard the phrase No Pain, No Gain. This kind of mindset has sadly become the norm for many. Evoking thoughts of discipline, persistence, toughness, etc. , it seems healthy on the surface but is far from it.
Exercise should never cause pain. Pain is often equated with results when in fact the opposite is true. On a primal level, the body responds to this as a threat- it can’t tell that you’re exercising (not running from something). Among a cascade of reactions, the release of cortisol causes muscle to break down and excess fuel to be stored.
It should never be viewed as punishment either, for a particular food choice or otherwise. Both mindsets create an incredibly negative view of exercise and can lead to exhaustion and burnout.
This doesn’t mean you can’t challenge yourself through your exercise, but it must be done slowly, gently. Dance across your ‘edges’ with small challenges, don’t leap over them into the space where pain occurs. Dance across them consistently, and the body will adapt- pushing them out further. Here is where you’ll discover your strength and a renewed, vibrant energy that’ll keep you coming back.
