Play in Schools

Children. Need. Play….period.

I believe play in elementary schools (other than recess time) is extremely important no matter the age whether its playing a game of kick ball with another class, running around outside for a few minutes to let off some steam, playing a game of “silent ball” in the classroom, a quick game of Heads Up 7-Up, dramatic play time (blocks, legos, etc). It gets them moving, gives their brains a rest and lets them recharge. Many children today don’t even get play time at home, some are on their couches in front of their screens (TV, iPad, phone, etc) from the moment they get home. If they have too much homework they are sitting at the table until that’s done and then head for the couch. This is why play time is extremely important.

I found an article on Scholastic.com in regards to this topic. The article stated, “There is a link between play and the development of cognitive and social skills that are prerequisites for learning more complex concepts as children get older.” The article also stated that children today do not interact with toys that are conducive to building imagination. In many instances pretend play with siblings or neighborhood children may not be available. Another reason why play in schools is so important.

I also found a blog called “Playtime in Schools” which is in support of playtime. It reiterated what I previously said about children because of the fact children spend such large amounts of time at school it can affect their performance and concentration. Children need a break during the day to recharge and refocus, and what better way to do it than through play!

Playtime other than the daily recess time in school is extremely important. It gives them a chance to have fun, recharge and build their imagination!

Yay for playtime!!
