What is ‘my’ truth?

OK a very profound title. It has been triggered by part of my daily routine which is meditation on my reiki principles. I am a reiki master and since I learned then 7 years ago they have become a very important part of my life. The principles are very buddhist in scope and encompass letting go of anger and worry, compassion, gratitude and honesty. They have morphed from what Dr Usui originally taught in the early part of the 20th century. I was taught that ‘doing work honestly’ meant being honest in every part of your life. Thanks to my qigong teacher I found a neat phrase to sum this up. ‘Just for today I stand in my truth’ because if I stand in my truth all the time that will mean I make better choices of work. Eg It is incompatible for someone who is passionate about being green to work in at a firm that is very polluting. It is not always easy and sometimes when I recite my daily mantra I find myself wondering how well I live up to it.

Because I know ‘my truth’ will different to other people, I have to remember that someone who disagrees with me sees the facts through their personal lenses. Because while facts are facts, ‘truth’ is how you interpret the facts. And nowhere is this more true than in politics.

I have friends who are Corbynista’s who I have to accept generally see him through a very different lens to mine…..whether from age or experience or differing political stances. But I know that finding ‘facts’ in the political arena can be hard especially when these facts are censored and filtered through media outlets that have their own agenda as well.

‘My’ truth is that he is too left wing for my taste, and that he is ineffective as a leader. My friends truth is very different and I get told the mainstream media distort and even lie. That there is a cover up. And sadly FB and other social media don’t help in this. Because they know what we like and show us what we like. This will of course tend to reinforce our prejudices.. So today I have followed jeremy Corbyn on Twitter and have liked his facebook page to see if that gives me a better insight into him.

Because before you can only really know what your ‘truth’ is if it stands up to challenge.
