そんな猫への感謝の気持ちを表すために、島の中央には「猫神社」（正式名称は美與利大明神）が建てられました。この神社は、国土交通省の「島の宝100景」にも選ばれるほど有名なんです。
2011年の東日本大震災で、田代島も大きな被害（ひがい — higai）を受けました。でも、全国の猫好きの人々が立ち上がり、「田代島にゃんこ・ザ・プロジェクト」という支援活動が始まりました。なんと、わずか3ヶ月で1億5千万円もの募金（ぼきん — bokin）が集まったんです！これぞ「猫の手パワー」（ねこのてぱわー — neko no te pawā）ですね。

Cat Paradise, Tashirojima: The Mysterious Island with More Cats than Humans
Have you ever heard of a cat paradise (neko no rakuen)? It’s a small island called Tashirojima in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture. Known as “Cat Island” (nekojima), it’s a dream come true for cat lovers, with more feline residents than human ones!
Tashirojima is home to an astonishing 130–150 cats, outnumbering the human population! But why are there so many cats? The secret (himitsu) lies in the island’s history.
During the Edo period, Tashirojima was known for its sericulture (yōsan-gyō), or silk farming. To protect the silkworms’ cocoons (mayu) from their natural predators, mice, cats were brought to the island. Moreover, cats played a crucial role in the island’s main industry, fishing. Fishermen (ryōshi) believed that cats could predict the fortune (kikkyō) of their catch and even worshipped them as guardian deities (mamori-gami) for bountiful fishing.
To show gratitude to these feline friends, a “Cat Shrine” (officially named Miyori Daimyojin) was built in the center of the island. This shrine is so famous that it’s been selected as one of the “100 Island Treasures” by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
In 2011, Tashirojima suffered significant damage (higai) from the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, cat lovers across Japan rallied to support the island, launching the “Tashirojima Nyanko The Project.” Incredibly, they raised 150 million yen in donations (bokin) in just three months! That’s what we call “Cat Paw Power” (neko no te pawā)!
Today, Tashirojima attracts visitors from all over the world as an island where cats and humans coexist (kyōzon) harmoniously.
