Today’s Art Education

Art is something that is very personal and incredibly expressive. In many instances, art education has proven to be incredibly useful, but that does not mean it has no room to improve. Unfortunately, today’s art education seems it has yet to acknowledge that. Right now, children are being taught how to draw a specific type of bird, or sketch out a certain flower. But unfortunately, that type of knowledge simply does not represent what art is supposed to be. A proper art class should teach children how to draw from observation or how to use common mediums such as graphite and charcoal based materials. If students start learning these principles and subjects, they will understand art so much more than what they would learn using what is currently being taught. As a student learning art, I personally believe that this method of learning is more useful and efficient compared to the previous methods. Not only does learning art by observation help me understand art as a subject, but it also helps me make greater observations in the real world, outside of the art studio.
