On Becoming a Software Engineer

While software development is not the only channel for problem-solving, it has emerged as a formidable tool for 21st century solutions across just about every industry. Automation, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, FinTech, the Block-chain, Quantum Computing, and the Internet-of-Things are all sophisticated technologies that are drastically changing and disrupting every industry, not without challenges though. Consequently, this moment also calls for equal, if not, more advanced information security systems and technologies in order to preserve the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information and data. These are only a few of the challenges facing current and would-be software engineers. I want to be a part of the solution. This desire has led me on a search for a software development/coding program that would allow me to grow organically into full-fledged software engineer with a solid foundation in computer science.

Becoming a software engineer is a great way for me to consolidate multiple interests of mine, like technology and innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship. I have had an unusual career trajectory — military (US Navy), healthcare, security guard, information technology, teaching and research assistant, and a few others. Nonetheless, I continue to feel unfulfilled. What seems to be missing is the skillset necessary to actualize my ideas. After some soul-searching and some self-evaluation, it has become clear that working in a creative environment where I can bring my ideas to life and solve problems, unencumbered, is extremely critical. My passion for software engineering has grown with time and intentionality. I continue to self-teach using books and online resources. However, my learning style requires a combination of group interaction, audio-visual aids, plus hands-on work.

I’ve looked into several coding bootcamps, but Holberton School seems to be great fit for becoming a full fledge software engineer. Holberton’s comprehensive project-based and peer learning methods seem to strike the right balance. Plus, the “no-up-front-tuition” model is a game-changer! Also, location, location, location! You can’t put a price on being able to network and build relationships in the heart of Silicon Valley.
