That I Find

A squirrel with an acorn guarding the fence,

A woodpecker’s time signature builds the suspense,

The day job for animals far outshines mine,

That I find.

The squirrel’s friend looks down: the executive percher,

The robin goes shopping for worms to give nurture,

Toward the end of a long day they join with like kind,

That I find.

The places they live in are living as well

They wave as I watch them. I ask and they tell.

It’s too bad I took the entire Pine family for mine,

That I find.

And yet, in their backyard I sit and I watch.

Woodpeckers, squirrels, robins playing hopscotch.

I know inside its warmer, but I feel this is fine,

That I find.
