‘Welcome to Nightvale’ got started as minimally edited audio drama recorded on a cheap USB mike.

Jacob,

I think you are missing the purpose of my reply. And I don’t want to speak for Ran, but I feel like he would agree.

Articles like this and statements like mine, aren’t here to discourage people from doing their best and trying something new. They are here to guide those people who are new to the medium.

We both have said that it’s fairly easy and affordable to take the time and pride in what you are creating, to make it the very best.

We are saying that you need to do yourself a favour.

If I were to ask the people in your example, I guarantee that they would say that you need believe in what you are doing, or ask yourself “WHY” you are doing it.

I was saying that you need to have enough respect for yourself and the people that will be listening to put out the best product you can produce. If that’s using a Rock Band mic to record your first show. That’s awesome! If that’s the best you can manage in the time, applause to you. It’s about doing the best with the cards you’ve been dealt. It’s about self respect…. It’s about rising people up…. It’s about building confidence and most importantly is about building a community.

I’m not a poker player, but if I were dealt a hand of 2 kings and 3 queens, I’m not going to play a 3 of a kind… I’ll take the time to sort my hand and play the full house….

This post is here to help people recognize what is important, not once does it say, if you can’t attain a certain level… to not bother trying. It’s purpose is to simply say, do yourself a favour, do your very best, edit your show and it will automatically make you more credible.
