“ Agree with it or not, Uber drivers are independent contractors . . . ”

This point is very much up for debate. Uber says that its drivers are independent contractors, but Uber keeps settling lawsuits that would provide a legal ruling on the point, which suggests that even Uber knows it may be mistaken about the independent contractor classification.

As for individual drivers, it may be that they’re better off making the money that Uber allows them to make than they would be otherwise, but if true, being better off doesn’t mean that Uber is not exploitative of its drivers. At any rate, Uber will certainly drop them like hot potatoes when and if its self-driving cars are able to take over the duties of human drivers, so any opportunities they have with Uber are very time-limited, whether or not two or two million people stop using Uber.
