Maybe Don’t Buy Toys That Record Everything You Say
Nicole Dieker

Creepy. I don’t want Siri, Echo, My Friend Cayla, voice-activated t.v.s, or any other extra listening devices in my home. It’s bad enough that laptops/ phones/ other devices that can be used for video chat contain microphones that can easily be used for listening purposes.

Things like Siri and My Friend Cayla really amaze me, though. At least laptops and phones come with so many features that putting up with a bugging device in your purse looks like a somewhat worthwhile tradeoff. But Siri and My Friend Cayla exist almost exclusively to listen to you, and their additional functionality is easily supplanted by Google, online conversations with AI, and dolls that don’t have working ears.
