I have to agree. If Bill Gates likes Dr. Pepper, he’s not going to be put off drinking it by a tax. However, a single mother making minimum wage?

There’s also something very uncomfortable about taxing an item that has connotations as a vice for the lower class while leaving the sugariest vices of the rich and the upper middle class untouched.
