“We promise you’ll get a raise as soon as we start making money” is still plenty obnoxious. ;-)

Otherwise, I completely agree with your points, though I’d point out that low salaries in the non-profit world are often lower than low salaries in the business world. I could easily survive on a low business salary in my area, but life would be a lot trickier on a low non-profit salary.
