Senate Champs call out the Koch’s Web of Denial on Climate

By Matt McKnight, Director of Public Engagement and the Congressional Champions Project for the League of Conservation Voters

Our climate champions in the Senate just put the Koch brothers and other big polluters on notice — if they fund organizations to deny climate change and stall climate action, then those front groups will be called out. It is time to shine a big light on the polluters’ “Web of Denial.”

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) led 18 senators in a series of floor speeches to shine a light on the polluter-funded “Web of Denial” that pumps out so-called research to undermine the scientific consensus on climate change. Despite what these fringe scientists and groups say, 97 percent of scientists say that climate change is real, caused by humans and requires urgent action.

Throughout two days, senators spoke on the floor, naming many of these polluter-funded groups and describing the ways they block and undermine action to address the climate. Participating senators included Harry Reid (D-NV), Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Richard Durbin (D-IL), Jack Reed (D-RI), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Tom Udall (D-NM), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Al Franken (D-MN), Chris Coons (D-DE), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Edward Markey (D-MA), and Gary Peters (D-MI).

The League of Conservation Voters supported our senate champs in this effort to expose the “Web of Denial” on climate change. We live-tweeted their speeches and continue to amplify their remarks on Facebook. LCV even sat down with Senator Whitehouse to learn more about this effort. Watch our Facebook Live chat with him in between speeches:

Senators Whitehouse, Markey, Schatz, Boxer, Jeff Merkley, Warren, Franken, and Bernard Sanders (I-VT) also introduced a resolution as a part of this effort. The resolution describes and condemns “the efforts of corporations and groups to mislead the public about the harmful effects of tobacco, lead, and climate change.” Congressman Ted Lieu (D, C-33) led 14 of his colleagues in introducing the House version of this resolution.

Of course, this fight is not over. We need to share the efforts of these Senate champs and do even more to expose polluters for their “Web of Denial” on climate change. Join the tens of thousands of LCV members who have already taken action to stand up to the Koch brothers and Big Polluters.
