Afraid Of Hiring A Toxic Employee? Give Them The Beer & BBQ Test

Some real truths here but one important thing I need to clarify.

First the truths.

I have posted about similar things. In my article about Finding the Hidden Value in a Potential Hire I point to having passion for something as being one of many indicators of value. So, yeah.

Then in another post I offer that in any interview there are really Only 3 Questions. One of them is something along the lines of “Can I see myself working with this person?” So, again, yeah.

Now here’s the clarification I need. The idea of ‘having a beer’ is both literal and figurative. What would that question become when you found out I rarely drink (occasional glass of red) and I’m a clean eater? Am I out? I’m in fact noodling a blog post with the working title “how do you politely refuse a cupcake?” because I haven’t figured it out yet. Seems you’re a bit of an outcast if you don’t join in and on occasion I have been put down for having healthy eating habits. Kinda too bad but I have found it to be almost a bit of a diversity issue.

When I headed up diversity recruiting efforts for a past corp I worked for, I made sure that some recruiting events were not centered around drinking as the main social activity….and we got kudos from a broader spectrum of candidates because of our open mindedness.

So I’m just wondering aloud how literal that question is to you and how you adapt it to pull in a wide range of candidates?
